External Batteries

While the Steam Deck comes with an internal battery that's around 5000 mAh, there are many external batteries you can buy that will greatly increase the time you get to play.

What's important

There are two things to consider when buying an external battery:  The battery's capacity, usually measured in mAh (milliamp Hour) or Wh (Watt hour), and the battery's maximum output, usually measured in W (Watts).

The battery's capacity is just that, how much power the battery can hold.  You can use this number to compare to the Steam Decks internal battery to get an estimate of how many "charges" you will get.  NOTE:  Many airlines impose restrictions on the size of batteries you can carry on, usually 100 Wh.

The battery's maximum output is much more important.  The Steam Deck requires an input of 45W in order to function.  While inputs lower than this can still charge the internal battery, if you power the Steam Deck on it will drain the internal battery until it powers off.  If you want to use an external battery to play the Steam Deck and charge the internal battery at the same time, you must get one with an output of greater than 45W.
